Hassan Elmouelhi

Dr.-Ing. Hassan Elmouelhi is an architect and urban planner with dual German and Egyptian citizenship, based in Berlin, with twenty-five years of professional experience in architecture, urban planning, urban design and urban development. He is Senior Researcher, Lecturer and Project Leader at the Habitat Unit, Chair of International Urbanism and Design, at Technische Universität Berlin, and Project Manager of the Urban Living Lab at the Arab Urban Development Institute.

He holds a Doctor of Engineering in Architecture and international urbanism from TU Berlin, awarded magna cum laude for a dissertation on culture and informal urban development based on Cairo's ashwa'eyat, or informal settlements. He also holds a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering from Cairo University, with a focus on urban development and a thesis on El Azhar Park and the El Darb El-Ahmar district, and completed master preparatory courses in sociology and anthropology at the American University in Cairo.

His work bridges academia and development cooperation. He has eleven years of experience as project manager and coordinator at the TU Berlin Habitat Unit and ten years of practice as an architect and urban designer in Egypt, and has advised international organisations including GIZ, UN-Habitat and GLTN on assignments in Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. He is co-principal investigator of the Libya Urban Planning and Development Capacity Building Initiative and leads a participatory neighbourhood greening programme in Tunis, Amman and Port Said funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. He has also contributed to the NATURIncMed methodology for participatory urban greening in the Mediterranean and directed the Encyclopedia of Urbanism and Architecture in Saudi Arabia.

He teaches extensively, has run more than twenty international interdisciplinary summer schools and workshops, and is a member of ISOCARP, DAVO and the Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers.
